Guncaster Vindicated + Extermination Day map pack. Wowee.
So there’s PillowBlaster who works with a crew to make Doom mods with absurdly powerful guns, seriously, the team’s weapon creations are godlike. And one day the fella decides to make the Guncaster mod which replaces the player’s character with a dragon who can do magic, uses an array of awesome weapons and has a plethora of items to collect.
It’s really damn good and it features the best videogame shotgun that I’ve ever had the pleasure of using, the 8-barreled Ironblast with a kickback so strong it launches the dragon skyward if it’s not fired on stable ground. As perfect as Metal Slug shotgun is, this one wins. Listen to the thing firing and you’ll understand.
Then there’s Sergeant Mark IV (the creator of Brutal Doom) who decided to remake Doom II’s levels with Hell on Earth Starter Pack, later renamed to Extermination Day. The environments get a fresh coat of paint, updating the occasionally outdated level design into the modern age. It’s really damn good.
Then there’s another guy (don’t worry, I’m getting there), Dinosaur Nerd, who decided to make their own rebalanced Guncaster Vindicated and make it fully compatible with Extermination Day. The result is the best singleplayer experience on this planet! An array of 30+ levels filled with secrets and heinous monsters from hell, all waiting for their opportunity to tear you apart… if you give them the chance, that is. And best of all, all this is completely free! As long as you own a perfectly legal copy of Doom II, of course.
I replay this thing once a year and it is my go-to recommendation whenever someone asks what to play next. So yeah, get yourself GZDoom, Doom2.WAD and Guncaster_Vindicated, then launch that bad boy.
